Little Avocets Nursery
We believe that a school nursery really offers a great start for children; access to a rich variety of play based learning opportunities run by staff with a clear understanding of the next steps children will take as they move through the primary school and how to prepare children for these.
At Wickham Market Primary School our nursery and reception classes are combined in a Foundation Stage Unit. This is made up of two large classrooms, that can either be opened up for children to move freely between or separated to allow for more focussed lesson time for older pupils when appropriate. These two classrooms open out onto a large outdoor learning environment, including a covered area allowing us to enjoy time outside whatever the weather.
Operating as a Foundation Stage Unit has many benefits. It makes the most effective use of staff, space and resources. Transitions for young children can be a cause of anxiety and concern for parents and children; a unit removes the hurdle between nursery and reception reducing the transitions a child has to make. Staff work with the children over a longer period of time increasing the opportunity to respond to children's unique needs and interests.
