Welcome to the Year 4/5 class page!

Summer Term

Welcome back.

I hope you have all had a chance to relax over the holidays and return to school ready for an exciting year where we will cover many topics and subjects.

Our first topic will be Victorians/inventions and E Anderson. Our class reading book  ‘Clockwork’ is linked to this period of history. Our literacy lessons will be based around the ‘power of reading’. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught alongside the reading book and pupils will have a weekly spelling test on Friday.

In maths pupils will start with reminders on place value in larger numbers and move onto recapping the four operations in maths, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Frequent practise at formal methods for the operations will help pupils feel confident in maths. Pupils will have a weekly times table, mental arithmetic test and should try to work on the timetable they find challenging and the speed of their number fact recall.

In science we will be investigating the following topics: materials and animals including humans, which will be linked to Victorians where possible to enable cross curricular learning.

Please note PE kits will be needed for Monday and Thursday afternoons (suitable sports footwear/trainers). For PE lessons please ensure that children with earrings have removed them for safety.

Year 5’s will have guitar lessons weekly so please encourage your child to practise and ensure their instrument is in school for their lesson. In music Year 4s will have recorder lessons.

The class will have Forest School sessions during the Autumn term and will be expected to wear outdoor coats and old clothes with suitable footwear as the schools, ‘back bushes’ can be muddy (letter to follow with confirmed dates)

Pupils will be expected to read at home and school regularly and keep a record in their reading journal. Children will be asked to complete a book summary (reading review) to show their understanding of the text read before moving onto another chapter or book.

Homework will be set on Fridays and pupils will also be asked to complete topic based projects termly. As always if you need to speak with me just catch me before/after school or make an appointment with the office if you need a longer meeting.
