Opportunity and enrichment for pupils and staff

Year 5/6

Welcome to year 5/6

This Summer term we have many topics and subjects to cover. This year due to the pandemic some areas of learning will be recapped to ensure pupils have covered the areas of learning needed.

Our first topic will be WW1 and our history, geography and art/ DT will be linked to this time in history. Our literacy lessons will be based around the ‘power of reading’. Grammar and vocabulary will be taught alongside the reading book.

There are many websites and books with information about WW1,

In maths pupils will start with recapping place value and number. Pupils will move onto developing their mathematical fluency in reasoning and problem solving questions. The maths will then move on to learning and recapping fractions. Topics in this part of maths pictorial representations of fractions and numerical. Pupils will have a regular practise at their number facts and times tables with TTRockstars/Numberbots.

Using manipulatives in maths to improve conceptual understanding

Please wear PE kit in school on the PE day (suitable sports footwear/trainers) and ensure that children with earrings remove them.  Please ensure that water bottles are provided for the warmer weather so that pupils can stay suitably hydrated.

Guitar lessons will be online weekly so please encourage your child to practise .

Pupils will be expected to read at home and school regularly and keep a record in their reading journal. Once a book is completed children will be asked to complete a book summary (reading review) to show their understanding of the text read before moving onto another book.

In science we will be investigating the following topics: living things and their habitats which will link in with the warmer weather and plants and animals beginning to florish.

Looking at growth of seedlings over time investigation.

Seesaw will be used to set homework learning tasks online. Pupils will be able to upload their work onto the learning platform for teacher comments.
