Wickham Market Primary School

Opportunity and enrichment for pupils and staff

Year 5/6

Welcome to year 5/6

This Autumn term with all pupils back in school after a substantial time with home based learning will take a little time for everyone to adjust to being in school. I hope you have had chance to enjoy some of the summer sunshine.

To help pupils settle more comfortably the class will be following a specially devised JIGSAW (PSHE) unit which should reassure pupils and smooth the transition from home to school.

Our class topic this term is Victorians and the Industrial Revolution and pupils will be learning all about how children’s lives were different in Victorian times.

We will be learning about Victorian education, inventors, industry and famous people to name a few topics to be covered.

There are many websites and books with information about the Victorians,

e.g. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/history-victorians/zh2w47h

Literacy will be based on a power of reading text ‘Street Child’ and will be linked to the history topic.

In maths the class will be following the White Rose scheme of working covering all operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Maths will involve investigations and problems to embed understanding of mathematical processes and ideas. We will start with recapping Place Value and its importance in numbers.

In science we will be working cross curricula and investigating Victorian fires, sponge cakes and dyes with lots of practical experiments.

We will continue to use the 'seesaw'platform which has been very successful during 'lock down' for some home based learning.
